Seller's Checklist
If it's time to sell your boat, then let's work together to make that as effective and painless a process as possible. Our job is to advertise and show your boat in its best light.
Your job is to bring us a boat we can sell! What's that mean? Paperwork, price and condition. Here's a checklist to look over before you come in with your boat.
- Get it CLEAN
- Get the dirty dishes and boxes of parts out of the cabin. Clean the head. Scrub the deck and hull. Make sure there are no funny smells inside (pump out that holding tank!!!). We will keep it clean when it is here, but we can only work with what you bring us.
- Make sure there's gas in the tank
- We can't take people on river trials if we have no gas to run your boat. If the boat sits idle during rainy seasons with an empty tank, you're risking having condensation form in the tank. Bring us at least half a tank with each boat to avoid future problems, and possible delays or lost sales when the time comes to take it out.
- List the quirks
- If your boat has some things about it that are a little unusual, make a list and let us know! Need to wiggle the throttle lever before you start the boat? Battery switches need to go on in a certain order? If we know ahead of time, we can manage the issue properly with the customer. If broker and customer discover something odd by surprise during a river trial, it can really throw doubt into the sale.
- Fix big problems, or lower the price
- No boat is perfect in every way. However, if you've got serious issues with the boat (dry rot, bad motor, etc.), you need to decide whether to get those issues taken care of before the sale, or accept that you need a lower price for buyers to consider it.
- Make the sale price fit the market
- If you set the sale price way outside the market, you won't sell the boat. People simply will not pay attention to a boat that is grossly overpriced. Throw away the ideas about replacement value, how much money you've spent to fix the boat lately, and how much you love your boat. What matters is the condition, the style and age, the features it has, and where the market is.
- Boat and trailer registration
- Have a copy of your boat and trailer title or registration with you when you bring in your boat. We must be able to document that you are the owner of both, or we can't sell the boat.
- Even when listed, you can use it
- The boat needs to be here for us to sell it, but it's still your boat until it sells. Feel free to visit, work on it (remember, the cleaner and better maintained, the better it shows!), and take it out from time to time. Just let us know, so we don't get surprised if it's gone.
